Pilates is a globally practiced exercise system, chosen by millions for both physical health and mental balance. But this powerful discipline has its roots in the early 20th century, shaped in the shadow of war. At Cosmos Pilates, we believe that understanding the rich history of this method brings deeper meaning and awareness to its practice.
The creator of the Pilates system, Joseph Hubertus Pilates, was born in Germany in 1883. Despite a weak and sickly childhood, he dedicated himself to strengthening his body. He studied yoga, gymnastics, martial arts, and ancient Greek-Roman training techniques to develop a comprehensive physical training philosophy.
During World War I, while interned in England, he developed a movement system to help fellow detainees maintain their health and build strength. This system became the foundation of modern Pilates. At the time, he attached springs to hospital beds—laying the groundwork for what we now know as the Reformer machine.
Joseph Pilates called his method “Contrology,” referring to the control of muscles through conscious movement and mental focus. After immigrating to the United States in 1926, he opened his first studio in New York. His method was quickly discovered and embraced by dancers, athletes, and rehabilitation professionals.
The aim of Pilates is not just to build strong muscles; it’s to create a balanced body, develop proper breathing techniques, enhance focus, and improve coordination. Unlike traditional fitness methods, Pilates views the body as an integrated whole.
After Joseph Pilates passed away in 1967, his students and followers continued to develop and expand the system. Today, both classical (mat and equipment-based) Pilates and modern variations are practiced and respected worldwide.
Studios have opened across the globe—from the United States to Europe, from Australia to Asia. Especially in the past 20 years, Pilates has become a staple for athletes, physiotherapists, and wellness enthusiasts alike.
